The Power of Responsible Supply Chains: Sustainable Palm Oil

This Earth Month, under the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” we’re highlighting how Bunge is making a difference by connecting farmers to consumers responsibly. This week, we spotlight advancements in Responsible Supply Chains through our work in sustainable palm oil.

Why Sustainable Palm Oil Matters
Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world, making up approximately 35% of global oil crop production. At Bunge, we are committed to sourcing and processing traceable and sustainably produced palm oil. Our Sustainable Palm Oil Sourcing Policy, is guided by No Deforestation, No Peat and No Exploitation (NDPE) principles and supports the agriculture sector’s roadmap to a 1.5°C climate pathway. Our goal is to achieve 100% NDPE for palm oil sourced.

Traceability1 is the foundation of a responsible supply chain
Understanding a product’s origin and how it is produced helps advance our Non-Deforestation Commitment. This includes achieving full traceability to mill (TTM - knowing which palm oil mill we sourced from) and traceability to plantation (TTP - knowing the origin of fresh fruit bunches including the names and locations of the suppliers). In 2025, we achieved global TTM of 97% and TTP of 96%, strengthening transparency across our supply chain.

Achieving transformation in the palm oil sector is a collective effort
Bunge works with industry peers, producers, and customers with the goal of raising standards and strengthening responsible practices. We are an active member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), promoting RSPO-certified palm to downstream customers, and a member of the Palm Oil Collaboration Group (POCG), where we work to accelerate the effective implementation of NDPE commitments throughout the supply chain. Since Bunge has operations in Malaysia, we are also a founding member of the MSPO Impact Alliance. There, we collaborate with industry peers and customers on Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil Standards, including human rights and regulatory requirements.

Supporting People and Communities
Bunge supports projects that help to empower smallholders and protect local ecosystems. For example, we partner with Musim Mas to train smallholders on good agriculture practices and to offer dedicated training programs for women. In 2025, we began a five-year partnership with Global Environment Centre to help conserve and restore the Southeast Pahang Peatland landscape.

We also work closely with suppliers through training and capacity‑building programs, including mapping production areas and reinforcing NDPE expectations. In 2026, Bunge partnered with IOI Corporation on a pre‑employment orientation initiative in Lombok, Indonesia, supporting ethical worker recruitment in the palm oil sector.

1 Bunge has developed its own traceability protocols for palm and soy. Continuous evaluation and enhancement of traceability processes are important for both environmental and social reasons, and we will address it vigorously.
